Larry Hazen PT, MS
Manager, Rehabilitation Services
Graduating with honors, Mr. Hazen earned his BS/PT degree
from Cal State Northridge and a Masters of Science degree
from Texas Tech University.
Mr. Hazen's career began at the renowned City of Hope where
he took a keen interest in cancer rehabilitation. His interests
extended into a six-month intensive program in Proprioceptive
Neuromuscular Facilitation at Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo,
California. Following this, in 1986 he led the development
of a lymphedema treatment program at Queen of the Valley
Medical Center,
where he now serves as an adjunct instructor for the Norton
School of Lymphatic Therapy.
As the Manager of Rehabilitation Services at Queen of the
Valley Medical Center, Mr. Hazen participates with patient
care activities and serves on multiple committees that serve
the
hospital and the community. Larry oversees a dynamic and
accomplished
Rehabilitation Services department that has grown to over
40 staff members including Occupational and Physical Therapists
and Speech-Language Pathologists.
The exciting transition of outpatient OT/PT Rehabilitation
Services to the Wellness Center is perfectly aligned with
his passion for continued professional growth and community
involvement.
Nita Durham, RD, CDE
Program Coordinator
Diabetes Wellness Program
Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Food
Administrative from Loma Linda University, followed by an
internship at Loma Linda Hospital and at Scripps Hospital
in San Diego where she participated in the Dean Ornish Medical
Research Program.
As a Registered Dietitian, and a Certified Diabetes Educator,
Ms Durham has focused her career overall in Nutrition education
with an emphasis in Diabetes. She has participated in several
national research studies. One noted national study was the
Diabetes Prevention Program where the research outcomes showed
that Type 2 diabetes could be delayed or prevented with improved
eating, weight loss and exercise.
With the Queen of the Valley Medical Center for only five
years, Ms Durham has focused her efforts in the education
of diabetes
self-management training and has been instrumental in the
development of the Diabetes Wellness Program, a program accredited
by the American Association of Diabetes. Ms Durham is an
active
member with the American Diabetes Association, American Association
of Diabetes Educators and participates in educational conferences
regularly.
With Ms Durham's vision, the first diabetes health faire
was held at the hospital and has become an annual event providing
informative education material, lectures, and exercise and
cooking demonstrations. We welcome her expertise to the Wellness
Center where she can expand her commitment in the field of
diabetes education to the community.
Tawnya Shine, RD, CDE
Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator
Synergy Medical Fitness Center
Tawnya Shine is the Wellness Center's registered dietitian. She
earned a Bachelors of Science
degree
in Nutrition and Food Service from Indiana University of
Pennsylvania, as well as a graduate certificate from University
at Buffalo. Her most recent certifications include
diabetes educator and childhood and adolescent weight management.
Her professional experiences include directing outpatient
Medical Nutrition Therapy, teaching Diabetes Self Management
Training, consulting for children and adolescents, as well
as, community outreach programs.
She also participated
in the creation of “Ready, Set, Go” an exercise
and nutrition grant, targeting adolescents
and adults, at risk for pre-diabetes.
Cathy Martinod
General Manager,
Synergy Medical Fitness Center
A native of the island
of Martinique in the Caribbean, Cathy has worked in the area
of health and fitness for over
fifteen
years. She achieved a Master’s
Degree in Kinesiology at the University of California at Hayward. Asked
what first drew her to this field of endeavor, Cathy says it is
her “passion
for living healthy, being fit, and wanting to share it with others.” She
began her career as a personal trainer as she felt this was a way in which she
could really touch people’s lives.
In her role as General Manager at Synergy,
Cathy sees herself as a liaison between all services offered and center operations
and wants to ensure the experience is as easy, pleasant,
and rewarding as possible. “I want to be sure people
are taken care of from day one.” Cathy’s personal
definition of wellness: “Wellness
means balance, that different aspects of life are in harmony:
eating well, exercise, sleeping well, having good relationships
with people around you.”
